Drivers have been warned to ensure they understand some of the most important rules of the road that have been changed
Motorists are being urged to familiarise themselves with significant recent changes to some of the most crucial road rules. New regulations have been introduced regarding what drivers can and cannot do in specific situations, but research indicates that many are either unaware or do not comprehend them.
Drivers are now prohibited from touching their mobiles in any way while driving and could face a fine and penalty points if caught. Previously, phone laws primarily concerned phone calls and texts, but they have now been tightened to mean that even touching your phone is illegal. The change was implemented to enhance safety following the proliferation of smartphones over the past decade and the increased distractions they pose. Despite the tightening of laws in 2022, research suggests that many drivers are still unaware of this, reports Birmingham Live.
Under the updated rules, pedestrians have priority at junctions, even without a designated crossing, meaning drivers must anticipate and yield to them stepping into the road. Motorists should be patient and prepared to stop, rather than resorting to aggressive behaviour like beeping their horn.
