for hours – some overnight – for a glimpse at the late monarch’s coffin as it lies in Westminster Abbey, I’m struck by a sense of detachment.

I can’t connect with most of the images that I’m seeing, or the things that breathless Royal pundits talk about as they fill the endless hours of rolling coverage.threat to arrest a man for holding up a sign that read ‘not my king’ , to the football teams facing punishment for playing a game after the Queen’s death, there is a sense that any negative or even apathetic reaction towards the pomp and ceremony of this moment makes you an enemy of the state, somehow less deserving to be part of this country.

But my British identity is entirely detached from the monarchy – this doesn’t make it any less valid.Having lost a parent recently, I understand and empathise with the outpourings ofI understand why people cry when they see the Queen’s coffin, why they might connect this moment to another, more personal loss in their lives.But that doesn’t mean we all have to subscribe to the same behaviour.
