Reform UK have won their first ever seats in the House of Commons
The Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage, has secured its first MPs, causing a stir in the political landscape. Early exit polls had predicted the party could win up to 13 seats, exceeding expectations.
This surge in support saw them push the Tories into third place in several initial constituencies, before securing victories for notable figures like former Tory Lee Anderson and Mr Farage himself, reports the Manchester Evening News. Following his win in Clacton, Mr Farage commented on the results, stating: "It shows that there is a level of disenchantment with politics. I think people are looking for something different.
He further emphasised the significance of the Reform UK vote, adding: "But, and here's the important thing, this is not a protest vote. They're not saying two fingers up to the establishment. They're saying, 'you know what, we really agree with what these guys are saying, we really agree with what they're saying about tax levels, we agree with what they say about levels of legal net migration'.
The Reform UK leader concluded with an observation on the ground, stating: "I promise you the enthusiasm of people voting Reform UK is truly extraordinary." With five seats yet to declare, Reform has secured four seats and 14% of the vote. The Liberal Democrats, who won 71 seats, picked up less of the overall vote share, with 14%.
