The Victorians loved a frill. Decorative ruffles were often deemed symbols of luxury. Since then, we’ve had a love-hate relationship with a fancy trim; one only has to turn to the intense swagging and frilled decor seen in the recent TV adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s Rivals to appreciate how beloved they were in the 1980s, and how out of place they were to become in the minimalist 1990s. Now, of course, the cottage core and maximalist crowds adore them.
