It was a big night for Martin McDonagh's brilliant dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin
“I’m here because I’m Black,” Jerrod Carmichael, host of the 80th Golden Globes, quipped upon opening the ceremony on Tuesday night at The Beverly Hilton. It was a reference to the 2021 race-relations scandal of the Globes and the fact that the ceremony was effectively cancelled last year, and it wasn't the only well-deserved dig that the comedian had in store for thePost-pandemic, there was a wealth of film and television to celebrate again.
There were also nods for– both leads Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan went home winners – while actors Angela Bassett, Austin Butler and Cate Blanchett were also presented with awards.Over in TV, no one could argue that it wasn’t Jennifer Coolidge’s night. In an impassioned and hilarious speech she picked up best actress in a supporting role, and shouted out Mike White for believing in her: “Even if this is the end, you changed my life in a million different ways”.
