With Faizan sequestered and unable to hear, Bruhat went first and spelled at a blazing pace, getting 29 right. Faizan got off to a slower start, grimacing when he felt he made a mistake. When time was up, he had spelled 20 correctly.After the confetti had fallen and the cheering stopped, Faizan’s family and supporters gathered around him to celebrate his deep run. Admiring competitors asked him to autograph their programs.
“I know they worked super hard, and to see them getting eliminated in their last year, it was just really heartbreaking to me,” he said. Faizan was sponsored by the Dallas Sports Commission, along with Sriya Gomatam, 14, of Coppell. The pair were the top two finishers in the Dallas regional spelling bee.
