A dispute over community funding for VE Day commemorations has emerged at Ards and North Down Borough Council, with the Alliance Party opposing a DUP-led proposal to double the funding amount.
The Alliance Party has clashed with Unionist parties at a local council borough over community funding for the 80th anniversary of VE Day. An Alliance councillor at Ards and North Down Borough Council expressed discomfort with a DUP proposal to double the funding allocation from £500 per event to £1,000 per event. The latest council meeting at Bangor Castle saw a divided chamber.
On a non-recorded vote, 24 elected representatives, including those from the DUP, UUP, and others, supported the DUP proposal, while 14, primarily from the Alliance Party and others, opposed it, with one abstention. This decision doubles the funding available to ratepayers in the borough from £30,000 to £60,000, increasing the number of grants from 30 at £500 each to 60 at £1,000 each. The council had agreed earlier to fund commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day on May 8, 2025, the official end of World War II in Europe. Officers were tasked with outlining potential ways to commemorate this historic anniversary, including national plans for beacon lighting and collaboration with local communities and groups. During a committee meeting, DUP and UUP representatives questioned why the proposed grants should be limited to £500 per group, arguing that this amount was insufficient, particularly for larger-scale events
