A new study reveals a 'postcode lottery' in care home standards, with almost 20% rated as 'requires improvement' or 'inadequate'. Some areas have every care home with one of the lowest ratings, raising concerns about the quality of care across England.

Almost a fifth of all care homes in England have been rated as substandard, including some areas where every facility fails to come up to scratch.

Last year the number of homes rated as requires improvement or inadequate rose nine per cent compared to 2023, from 2,646 to 2,895, according to analysis by the House of Commons Library for the Liberal Democrats. One in five of care homes have been rated as 'requires improvement' or 'inadequate', the two lowest ratings in the system.

'As they bury their heads in the sand, people are stuck in hospitals because the care services simply do not exist. Too many families are being left with few options and are struggling to find the care for their loved ones. This was followed by North Norfolk, Weston-Super-Mare, Leicester West, Coventry North West and Torbay, which all had at least 15 care homes as requiring improvement.

But the County Councils Network said the extra funding would not come close to covering forecast costs facing its members, while the District Councils Network said the changes mean 'little or no increase' in funding in many areas with worrying consequences for services. People should be 'protected from the catastrophic costs of upfront care' that see them forced to sell their homes, Mr Streeting suggested this morning.

That plan would have introduced an £86,000 cap on the amount an older or disabled person would have to pay towards their support at home or in care homes.
