Lately, it seems like almost everything worth watching – from ‘The Last of Us’ to ‘Yellowjackets’ to ‘Pearl’ to ‘Skinamarink’ – is absolutely terrifying.

This makes sense: the raised stakes of our late-capitalist end times seem to demand the most high-intensity viewing possible just to make us feel, and if you’re the kind of person who can manage to watch something scary without having a full-on breakdown, I’m sure you’re delighting in the current box-office power of the horror movie. For me, though, it’s a little more complicated.
I’d previously thought of myself as a pretty tough third grader, but by the time the credits were rolling onI’m proud to say that, at 29, I’ve fully conquered my fear of the night, but I’m still closer to a third grader in terms of my appetite for fear-inducing content.
