A group of amateur metal detectorists dug up a hoard of more than 550 rare gold and silver coins dating back to the 14th century.The four men originally found 12 ornately decorated silver Edward I and II coins.But over the next few days, they found hundreds of coins – including 12 ultra-rare full gold nobles from the time of the Black Death.
The find – dubbed the Hambleden Hoard – is the biggest gold and silver collection found in the UK for around a decade.‘After finding the hoard, and then clearing the area, we had to extend the search twice more because we were finding so much.Dariusz Fijalkowski, Mateusz Nowak, Andrew Winter and Tobiasz Nowak made the find
Andrew said his machine was emitting a code which suggested they had detected a hammered silver coin – so he started digging.Then-stranger Dariusz was close-by and found silver coins. ‘We just kept finding, finding, finding and digging and digging and digging. My machine was like a hoover.’
