Amazon has suggested that the £1.70 knife used by Axel Rudakubana to murder three children and injure ten others at a summer holiday club in Southport was delivered to one of his parents. The delivery driver recorded the package being handed to someone visibly over 25 years old at Rudakubana's home, where he lived with his parents. The retailer is currently investigating how Rudakubana bypassed age checks to make the purchase.
Amazon has suggested that the £1.70 knife used by Axel Rudakubana in the Southport massacre was likely delivered to one of his parents. The delivery driver recorded that the package was handed to someone visibly over 25 years old at Rudakubana's £130,000 Merseyside home, where the 17-year-old lived with his parents. Rudakubana's parents, Laetitia and Alphonse, fled Rwanda for the UK in the 1990s and claimed asylum.
Alphonse, a taxi driver, is believed to have been an officer in the Rwandan Patriotic Army. The couple has since moved away from their home near Southport and are in hiding. Their local church, where they were active members, has stated they severed contact when their son was arrested and charged last summer. Days before the Southport attack, Rudakubana's father intervened when his son attempted to get a taxi to his old school, where he planned to attack pupils. This incident was captured on a Ring doorbell. There is no indication that Rudakubana's father knew about his son's plans.Rudakubana's home life appeared chaotic. He reportedly slept in the living room of the three-bedroom terraced house and the property was filled with Amazon boxes. In his bedroom, which was nicknamed the 'Ricin lab', investigators discovered materials capable of producing enough Ricin to kill almost 13,000 people.Amazon found itself under scrutiny after Rudakubana purchased one of their knives to murder three children and attempt to kill ten more at a Taylor Swift-themed summer holiday club. However, Amazon maintained that its driver followed the correct procedure and handed the knife to an adult. They are currently investigating how Rudakubana bypassed age checks by using software to conceal his real age, despite his name being on the package. Amazon's policy prohibits the sale of knives to anyone under 18, and deliveries must be made to someone who appears over 25 or someone aged between 18 and 25 with valid identification. Amazon stated that in Rudakubana's case, their records indicated the driver recorded the delivery to someone visibly over 25, suggesting it was likely delivered to either his mother or father. Rudakubana's older brother was away at university. Axel Rudakubana, 18, was jailed for a minimum of 52 years. The £1.70 knife is still available for purchase on Amazon, accompanied by an age verification warning that the company states was followed. Merseyside Police released images of the machete, crossbow, arrows, and a collection of combat knives discovered during a raid on Rudakubana's home after the murders in July last year. However, their search was immediately halted when they found a container used to manufacture the deadly poison ricin hidden in his bedroom. They returned to the house in Bank wearing specialized protective equipment to remove the container, which was later transported to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down in Wiltshire. Deanna Heer KC, prosecuting at Liverpool Crown Court, revealed that the 150 castor beans found at the scene could have produced between 1.07 and 5.33g of Ricin – enough to kill 12,500 people if inhaled. Photos of the unassuming plastic lunchbox, containing the crude mixture of homemade Ricin, were released for the first time yesterday. Toxicologists at the world-renowned Ministry of Defence laboratory confirmed its active toxicity
