The online retail giant is one of six organisations that has bene given permission to trial beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone flights in the UK this year.
Amazon is set to expand its drone-flying horizon in the UK after being selected as one of six organisations to participate in a groundbreaking trial by the Civil Aviation Authority . The trial focuses on beyond visual line of sight drone flights, allowing operators to control drones without keeping them in direct eyesight.
The CAA has accredited other ventures for BVLOS trials, which include projects for the inspection of offshore wind farms, engagement by the National Police Air Service, work by air traffic control service Nats, initiatives from Orkney in Scotland, and efforts to transport emergency medical supplies. With an eye on future integration, these schemes will utilize "advanced technologies" in navigation and control, as well as for detecting surrounding aircraft.
She emphasized that the data collected would greatly contribute to shaping policies and the future regulatory framework concerning drone operations. Adding further, she mentioned: "Our goal is to make drone operations beyond visual line of sight a safe and everyday reality, contributing to the modernisation of UK airspace and the incorporation of new technology into our skies."
