Riots followed the result of the 2021 US election. Now the vote count is being opened up to fresh transparency to avoid a repeat.

Photo: Samuel Corum/GettyAmong the angriest of the 25,000 tweets that Donald Trump issued while in the White House was one posted during the 2020 election count, asking who exactly had appointed the media to “call who the next president will be?”
He has launched X’s Election Integrity Community, “dedicated to sharing potential instances of fraud and irregularities” – and the 10,000-member group is alive with wild theories that set the scene for “Stop the steal 2024”. Before that point, it will make thousands of “race calls” at counts from coast to coast. At the last US election, AP claimed 100 per cent accuracy in these calls.
AP reporters might also talk directly to local election officials on how many votes remain to be counted and the agency only makes a call at the point when “we know that there is no path for that trailing candidate to overtake the leading candidate”, says Johnson.
