When historians of emotion look back on this year, at least in British history, they will highlight 'powerlessness' as the emotion of our age‘There is no mindset that stinks more pungently of privilege than an American complacent about the power they wield over the rest of our lives’ For roughly 80 years, Britain has had sufficient confidence in the United States to pool our military and security intelligence, alongside Canada, Australia and New Zealand, sharing high-stakes secrets in...
Then there were the military intelligence documents scattered all over Mar-a-Lago: one such document, photographed by an employee in 2021 when a box spilled open over the floor, is marked “SECRET//REL TO USA, FVEY” – meaning that it refers to intelligence assigned to the Five Eyes network. Trump had taken it home to his country club, where he is reported to have regularly bragged to visitors, foreign and domestic, about the classified material he had retained.
It’s likely that by tomorrow we still won’t know for sure which presidential candidate will be inaugurated on the steps of the US Capitol next January. The recounts, the absentee ballot certification, the litigation and, one fears, the civil unrest all lie between now and a settled transition of power in the New Year.
How else did the British reactionary left come to enforce a strictly American vocabulary on our understanding of our being and our sense of race, sex and gender? How else did the British reactionary right find itself babbling in response about the evils of “critical race theory”, “libtards” and “cultural Marxism”? The English language has long since been lost to the English. The early Roman Empire granted unparalleled advantages to its own citizens; rights in property; rights in marriage.
