You may be the kind of person who endeavours to try the traditional and maybe even more obscure food and drink of the country you are visiting on holiday.
Butter pie The guide's introduction says that is "scratches the surface of a mind-bending world of eating" but we think it has done a fairly thorough job on the history of the mighty butter pie. It is perfectly described in a nutshell as "the rich, potato-filled dish nourished Catholics on meatless Fridays".
Black/parched peas There's many bold and confident statements within the guide, but we think they have got it spot on here. Bene’n’hot The book's entry on this French liqueur-based drink, which was created by World War I veterans is detailed and informative. We learnt something we didn't already know, too, that the herby and sweet liquor Bénédictine was originally inspired by monks 500 years ago.
A snippet of what Gastro Obscura had to say about Bene’n’hot: "Though many members of the 11th Battalion are no longer alive, they’ve passed on their love for the Bene’n’hot to future generations. Today, the local Burnley Miners’ Club orders up to 1,000 bottles of Bénédictine a year, compared to an average bar’s one or two.
Lancashire hot pot Ah, the classic Lancashire hot pot, a true staple in any Lancastrian home. And the Yanks know it too, branding it a "hearty stew" and "unassuming delicacy".
