Planning commissioners say organization’s strong community service benefit is reason to back its permits, variance requests

A veterans’ support organization that’s believed to be the oldest nonprofit in Encinitas ought to be granted the permits it needs to transform its aging downtown facility into a modern, two-story center, the Planning Commission decided Thursday.
“ look forward to seeing your building rise up and serve the community,” commission Chair Steve Dalton told the audience of American Legion members immediately after Thursday’s vote. Noting that the commission typically turns down such variance requests, particularly when they come from mega-sized home projects, Commissioner Susan Sherod said that American Legion members made a valid justification for their variance by arguing that there is a significant community benefit to allowing them to have a larger upper story area.
“It’s not only a benefit to the veterans’ community, it’s a benefit to the broader community that we all serve,” Alan Kholos, a Del Mar Union School District board member who served in the Air Force, said as he talked about how the organization hosts gatherings where schoolchildren can meet war veterans.
