As the spring severe weather season heats up, the American Red Cross is in need of hundreds of volunteers statewide.

The Red Cross needs about 600 more volunteers in Alabama for things like disaster response and blood drives, according to spokesperson Annette Rowland. You can also volunteer in the Red Cross office or at home virtually. Rowland says the volunteer landscape is changing with a lot of their volunteers aging out so that’s why they need people to step up and help out especially from the local area.
“In my community, I’m going to know ‘oh…this person lives here and this person lives here…and if you need food from this grocery store and you can do this way’…I’m going to understand the logistics of my community and the nuisances and that’s what you miss out on when you don’t have local volunteers on the ground helping,” Rowland said.
Rowland says there are many times when we are dealing with multiple disasters at once so that’s why its critical to have volunteers ready to respond to help people in need.
