Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has sparked controversy by benching both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund for the 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace. Former footballers Chris Sutton and Theo Walcott have expressed concerns about the long-term impact of this decision on the strikers' morale and performance. Meanwhile, ex-United defender Paul Parker suggests Amorim might be sending a message to the club's hierarchy about his lack of confidence in the current strikers.

Chris Sutton believes Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has created a 'real problem' by dropping both strikers, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, for the 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace. Amorim opted for midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in a false nine role, a decision that Sutton feels has sent a negative message to the two strikers. He worries that Zirkzee and Hojlund might begin to lose motivation and not fully commit for the rest of the season.

Sutton, a former Premier League striker, stated on the BBC, 'If you are Zirkzee or Hojlund and you're seeing Mainoo - who is a really excellent footballer but isn't a centre-forward or false nine - being picked, you are thinking: 'How on earth is he playing in front of me?' That is a real problem. Amorim is basically telling the pair of them that he doesn't rate them in any way, shape or form. He could lose these two players, mentally, for the rest of the season now and they might think about not applying themselves.' Fellow pundit Theo Walcott, a former Arsenal star, suggested that Amorim's move could be a test of the players' dedication. He noted, 'Managers sometimes do this to test players. They want to see whether the player is with them or not. It's going to be interesting to see how Manchester United do cope with this. Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker, speaking to Metro, believes Amorim might be sending a message to the club's hierarchy. He explained, 'It could have been a signal to the people above him to let them know that he has no faith in the two players he has tried there. It’s like having two goalkeepers on the bench. Every fan knows that when a manager puts two keepers on the bench, he’s making a point to those above him that he needs someone. I think it could have been that.

Keys believes Amorim's hope for dismissal stems from a desire to avoid the financial burden of implementing his system, which he believes would require a significant investment. Amorim has publicly addressed his previous harsh language towards his players, stating it was a reflection of his own frustration and not targeted criticism.
