It’s almost time for the city of Mobile to put up or shut up when it comes to Amtrak. The company wants to run two trains a day from Mobile to New Orleans and two a day running in the other direction. But the plan first must win approval from the Mobile City Council to spend $3.048 million over three years to subsidize operations.
) - It’s almost time for the city of Mobile to put up or shut up when it comes to Amtrak.from Mobile to New Orleans and two a day running in the other direction. But the plan first must win approval from the Mobile City Council to“The biggest thing I’m concerned about is the liability after three years,” District 2 Councilman William Carroll said during a presentation by Amtrak officials Tuesday.
The sponsoring entity for this line would be the Southern Rail Commission, a partnership of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. But the Alabama state government has shown no interest in paying for the Mobile to New Orleans line, leaving Mobile taxpayers to shoulder that burden. Stimpson said all that, which hinges on Mobile approving the operations agreement, would be an enormous benefit to port even if the city does not keep subsidizing Amtrak over the long haul.
For Mobile, Lang said, the two incoming trains a day would have a combined capacity of 300 seats and added that Amtrak trains usually are close to full. “There are billions and billions of dollars of revenue out there, and if other people want it, let them pay for it,” he said. Daves told FOX10 News that it “would help” if the state government agreed to pick up half of the Alabama cost. But he said Amtrak’s own figures point to a perpetual operating deficit that taxpayers would have to pick up. He also rejected arguments that the $3.04 million over three years is a low-risk commitment that the city could pull the plug on if the service turned out not to be successful.
