This new body horror shows an underappreciated woman turning into a dog - if the metaphor is a little on-the-nose, the premise - feeling like yourself again post-partum - is satisfying
I don’t have children myself. But many of my friends do, and one of the common refrains I hear from new mothers is a version of this: “I just want to do something that makes me feel like myself again.”
For all our social progress on childcare, paternal responsibility and working mums, the fact of the matter is this: stay-at-home motherhood to a small child is an intense, specifically gendered, sometimes joyful and sometimes terrifying existence.is a film that attempts – sometimes successfully – to capture this, through a bizarre, magical-realist story of animal transformation.
But while allowing Adams to bury her face in a bowl full of mac and cheese or pierce what she thinks is a boil – only to discover it’s a tail – provides some gross-out enjoyment, the film is a bit too on-the-nose to be as funny as it wants to be.The points about gender and motherhood are well-made but sometimes feel undercut by broad generalisations or frankly silly moments of dog-related humour.
When Heller is metaphorically exploring the potentially horrifying physical transformation of pregnancy and post-partum life – and the personal sacrifices of identity, career, and self that women face when they become mothers –has a lot of smart, real things to say. The texture, the exhaustion and the gristle of being a stay-at-home mother to a small child feels visceral here.
Still, I love what it’s getting at: for a new mother, the pleasures of being as gross, growling and socially unacceptable as a bitchy little terrier might just make you feel like yourself again.
