After the Strictly dancer's collapse backstage this weekend, Rosamund Dean tells how she under-estimated the challenges of life after treatmentThe 34-year-old dancer, one of the stars of the BBC’s Saturday night juggernaut, has become a national sweetheart after the way in which she handled being diagnosed with breast cancer last spring.
Besides the ongoing physical impact of treatment, I was also dealing with the psychological effects. Battered and scarred by treatment, my nervous system was on high alert, hyper-vigilant for signs of recurrence. Earlier this year, I interviewed Amy about her experience of coping with ongoing issues such as early menopause after treatment. “In a way, it might help that I’m a dancer, because I understand my body quite well,” she said. “And also because I’ve had Crohn’s disease since the age of 11, so I’m quite symptom and body-aware from that.”
As well as reconnecting with your body after treatment, another thing I’ve learned is that it’s so important to be open about how you feel emotionally. It can actually be really difficult to let those close to you know that you’re struggling. There is a sense of not wanting to let loved-ones down, particularly when they are so keen to see you feeling better – but this can make the fear and anxiety worse because it’s being bottled up inside.
