It must be tough to be single in a world that demands coupledom, especially when you’re 29 and everyone around you is getting married and having children. That’s what Prue Dashen is discovering in Jessica Seaborn’s debut novel, Perfect-Ish, a buoyant rom-com beach read that snugly traces an aimless underachiever in the last year of her 20s.
She goes on a number of dates and assesses potential partners by screening their financial status. “He makes good money,” she tells Delia after a first date. “He’s saving up to buy an apartment next year. Somewhere in the Inner West.” When Prue’s luck changes at a wedding and she meets Hugh, a “smooth, considerate, laid-back fish-obsessed man” , their flirtation is entirely based on the subject of real estate.“I kept wondering how you could afford to live here by yourself, especially with a dog,” Hugh ponders aloud after he visits Prue’s place in Rose Bay. She lives in a two-storey stand-alone with views of the Harbour Bridge from the top-floor bedroom.
