From one goals to three, no lead is safe in the NHL playoffs this spring. Back-to-back opening nights of the second round series in the Western Conference featured Dallas and Edmonton blowing three-goal advantages in very different ways. Through the first 50 games of the postseason, teams allowing the first goal have won 19 of them.

Edmonton Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner looks back at the puck as it bounces out of the net after Vancouver Canucks’ Conor Garland, hidden back left, scored during the third period of Game 1 of a second-round NHL hockey Stanley Cup playoffs series, Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“The teams that win and have success this time of year are the teams that are able to recognize when they have momentum and try to keep it and when they don’t have it, try to get it back as quickly as possible,” Carter said. “I don’t know if there’s so much more that teams can do. I think teams are playing pretty good hockey now. It’s just that this time of the year sometimes you get the bounces and sometimes you don’t.

“That happens in the playoffs,” McDavid said. “You try to hold on to leads and sometimes you’re a little bit, maybe, too passive.”, would have liked to see Edmonton push more offensively and make Vancouver defend.
