Brian Leishman could not contain his frustration with his own party at the job losses at the plant.
Anas Sarwar has been accused by one of his own Labour MPs of being “very quiet” on the closure of the Grangemouth oil refinery. Brian Leishman also said Scottish Labour needs to do an “awful lot more” to help hundreds of workers facing unemployment.
The Scottish Labour leader has faced criticism of his own for comments during the general election in which he suggested the jobs would be saved. He said at the time: “We would step in and put our money where our mouth is. We would step in to save the jobs at the refinery and to invest in that transition by making an energy transition hub at Grangemouth, and we would put hundreds of millions of pounds behind it to make it a reality to protect those jobs.
He replied: “I honestly don’t know. I want to know because I believed Anas when he said that in the leadership campaign.” Asked about claims Sarwar had lied, Leishman said: “I’m not going to say Anas is a liar.” The MP stepped up his criticism of the Starmer Government: “The first seven months havn’t been what we want it to be. We can, and must, do better.”
