EXCLUSIVE: An account of a meeting obtained by the Record reveals Sarwar saying Labour would have a “repair job” with Muslim voters “every day” until the general election.
A furious Anas Sarwar claimed Keir Starmer’s comments on the bloodshed in Gaza lacked “empathy” and “humanity” during an emotional outburst.
He added: “I recognise what you say around the hurt, particularly felt by Muslim communities. If anything, I would say you downplayed the hurt, rather than played it up. Sarwar also said: “The reparative work that we are going to have to do with the Muslim community isn’t going to be done with one statement, isn’t going to be done with one tweet, isn’t going to be done with one speech, it isn’t going to be done in a week.
Sarwar said: “I made the point to senior colleagues - you can work out who they are - saying it shouldn’t take a Muslim voice in Scotland to be getting people to understand the impact on Asian communities across the country of what language is being said, but sadly that’s what it’s been, or that’s what it felt like.
