Daily Record Political Editor Paul Hutcheon says Sarwar's strategy of alignment with UK Labour worked for the general election, but will lose him Holyrood 2026.

A terrible Holyrood opinion poll for Scottish Labour shows the risks of Anas Sarwar ’s political strategy. Ahead of the general election , the Glasgow MSP was correct in his analysis that Scots would vote Labour if they felt the UK party stood a chance of winning.

He has been acting less like Scotland’s leader-in-waiting and more like Starmer’s spokesman north of the border. The reality is Sarwar gives the impression he is more loyal to Downing Street than the country he wants to lead. Last week’s Scottish Budget, during which the SNP outfoxed Labour, further underlined Sarwar’s weakness in the run up to 2026. John Swinney is a savvy political operator whose Budget set traps for Labour. The Nationalist Government found the cash to partially reverse Reeves’ WFP cut and prepare the ground for abolishing the two child benefit cap.

Labour sources say they do not want to show their policy hand too soon lest the SNP steal their clothes. Fine, but the election may be over by the time Labour publishes its manifesto.
