Andie MacDowell shares her move from Los Angeles to a quieter Southern town, her experience as an empty nester, and her journey to finding a new sense of self. She also opens up about her struggles with Piriformis Syndrome and how she manages her pain through exercise.
Andie MacDowell has made a significant move, bidding farewell to the often-intense spotlight of California. The celebrated Hollywood actress revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show that she has relocated from Los Angeles, a city known for its scrutiny of women's appearances as they age. Instead, MacDowell has chosen to put down roots in a quieter Southern town.
'I moved down to South Carolina and live in a community with a lot of people my age, so it makes it really easy to socialize,' the movie icon shared. This move came after MacDowell, who has three adult children with her ex-husband Paul Qualley, experienced an empty nest. She felt the need to embrace a new chapter in her life. 'My daughter Margaret basically told me I needed to get a life. She was right,' MacDowell admitted to Barrymore. She reminisced about the days when her children were young, often following her even to the bathroom, wanting to be part of her every moment. Now, they have their own lives and families, leaving MacDowell to rediscover herself. 'Everything changes. It's a hard shift,' she acknowledged. 'You hear about how a lot of mothers react when they, a lot of times people like they are happy, you know, they're free or whatever,' but MacDowell didn't necessarily feel that way.Despite the challenges of an empty nest, MacDowell has created a fulfilling new life for herself. She has a new circle of friends with whom she can connect, and she is excited about the future. In fact, she is about to become a grandmother again as her son is expecting a baby soon. 'My son's about to have another one, so I'm gonna have three little girls,' she shared. 'So I do have a life now. I created a life. I figured it out, you know, it took me a while.' MacDowell also shared some health news. During her conversation with Barrymore, she revealed that she suffers from Piriformis Syndrome, a condition that causes pain, numbness, or tingling in the buttocks and down the back of the leg. 'I have piriformis syndrome,' MacDowell said. 'It's a muscle that kind of clamps down on my sciatic nerve and it was shooting down my leg. I thought I was gonna have to have hip replacement. Thank God my hips are fine.' She manages the pain with regular exercise, working with a personal trainer to strengthen her hips and core. 'I have to work my tiny little bottom and my hips. I have to work the bottom and work my hip. I just do it every day.
