A man who spent 17 years in jail for a rape he didn't commit says an inquiry into how he was wrongfully convicted must be made statutory. Andrew Malkinson, 57, says he is now living in a tent in a campsite in Spain and expects to have to wait years for compensation.
Justice Secretary Alex Chalk ordered an independent inquiry into the circumstances and handling of the case after Mr Malkinson's conviction was quashed. Now, Mr Malkinson says he thought it was a mistake not to compel witnesses, by law, to testify and disclose documents, The Guardian reports. The inquiry's chair is expected to be named soon.
Mr Malkinson is reported to have spent the summer living on his former partner's houseboat in the Netherlands, before going on a road trip through France and Portugal to Seville in a friend's van. His home is a tent with an inflatable airbed on a campsite. He told The Guardian it is likely to be two years before he sees any compensation as he plans a civil claim.
Mr Malkinson said he hopes to settle eventually in the Netherlands, where he had lived before his arrest. He is appealing to the Dutch authorities to grant him residency on compassionate grounds. GMP said they had no comment to make at this stage 'as investigations are ongoing by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and government'.
