Andrew Tate, the controversial online personality, has been released from house arrest in Romania despite facing serious charges. The court replaced house arrest with judicial control, allowing him more freedom but imposing restrictions.

Andrew Tate has been released from house arrest in Romania despite facing accusations of rape and the trafficking of minors. The self-proclaimed 'misogynist', who gained initial fame after his appearance on the British version of Big Brother, had been confined to his mansion since August. This followed the initiation of a second criminal investigation by prosecutors against him, his brother Tristan, and four other suspects.

All face accusations of forming an organized criminal group, trafficking, trafficking of minors, sexual intercourse with a minor, and money laundering. The trio maintains their innocence. A court has now lifted the house arrest measure, replacing it with judicial control as part of the second investigation. Shortly after the news broke, Tate tweeted without elaboration: '300 million compensation from Romania and a Netflix deal.' Half an hour later, he wrote: 'The harder they try to make me go away… The bigger I become. The world is mine.' Under the less restrictive preventative measure known as judicial control, Tate is required to check in with police at regular intervals and is prohibited from contacting other suspects or witnesses in his case. He is also restricted from leaving Romania. The Tates, former kickboxers with dual US and British citizenship, are the most prominent individuals facing trial for human trafficking in Romania. The two brothers also hold a British arrest warrant and will be extradited after the completion of Romanian trial proceedings, a court ruled in March. A prior criminal case against Tate was unsuccessful in December when the Bucharest court of appeals decided not to put him on trial but to return the case to prosecutors. The decision, which cited shortcomings in the indictment, dealt a setback to the anti-organized crime prosecuting unit DIICOT.
