ANALYSIS: Andrew Wilkie's stance against a Hobart AFL stadium a matter of 'reading the room' of the electorate
Mr Wilkie — who's spent much of his career talking about integrity in politics and curbing access to poker machines — prides himself on being informed by the views of his community, and says voters in Clark are almost unanimous in opposing a stadium at Macquarie Point.
Years ago, Mr Wilkie was advocating for a rectangular stadium to be built in Hobart as part of a push for an A-League club in the state.Mr Wilkie says Hobart residents want taxpayer millions spent on other priorities like health. Premier Jeremy Rockliff has hit out at opponents like Mr Wilkie as he pushes for the stadium and a 19th AFL licence, accusing them of peddling "mistruths" in aBut Mr Wilkie is not the only federal MP urging the federal government not to fund the stadium — or at least think twice before doing so.
