WIMBLEDON, England — A cool, gray London morning took on a doleful air shortly before the gates of the All-England Club opened at 10:30 and Andy Murray, the 37-year-old who returned British tennis to glorious heights by winning two Wimbledon championships, announced his withdrawal from the singles tournament just over a week after back surgery.
He ends his Wimbledon career having won the title here in 2013 and 2016, the first of which made him the first British man to win the singles crown at the hallowed tournament in 77 years. He also won the U.S. Open in 2012. The subject of media and fan attention — and pressure — that was especially intense in the United Kingdom, Murray won over fans worldwide with his acerbic wit and earnestness.
