Angela Rayner may argue that she does not owe capital gains tax on the sale of her former home because she offset it by fitting a new kitchen, it was reported today.
But the paper said independent legal advice she has received says that even if it was not her main home, she would not be liable for CGT on its sale because of the amount she spent on renovating its kitchen before offloading it. Asked on Times Radio whether Sir Keir taking a look at it would show confidence in his deputy, Mr Miliband said: 'I think it could send the opposite signal.'
The advice has been seen by members of Sir Keir's team, but the Labour leader has not asked to look at it himself. Ms Rayner is under mounting pressure as both police and council investigations have been launched into the saga.At Prime Minister's Questions yesterday, Sir Keir was mocked by Rishi Sunak over his claim that he does not need to see the legal and tax advice which Ms Rayner says clears her of any wrongdoing.
