Sacrifice fly the difference as Angels edge Padres 2-1 in pitchers' duel
Tyler Anderson, a good pitcher on a bad team, was strong enough for long enough to allow that bad team to eventually out-execute the Padres. The Angels, who entered Monday’s game with the third-worst record in the major leagues and on a five-game losing streak, beat the Padres 2-1 when they turned Jo Adell’s lead-off double into a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Padres had failed to do that when Jurickson Profar doubled to start the top of the eighth.
Again, Ward fired a throw to shortstop Zach Neto, whose offline throw to the left of the plate arrived in plenty of time for catcher Logan O’Hoppe to make the catch and move back across the line to tag a sliding Profar just in front of the plate. Kim stopped at second base after his one-out double in the seventh and ended that inning stranded at third.
