The week around another big Boris Johnson press conference feels like being trapped in a seven-day stress dream

‘It just feels like one of those days, doesn’t it?’ a colleague commented during a daily morning meeting last month. ‘Yeah, I think everyone has been feeling a bit blah this entire week,’ someone else replied. I sigh in relief, knowing I’m not the only one overwhelmed for no apparent reason.anxiety

And then I realised… it’s happening at similar times every month because there is one thing we can rely on to come every month: aannouncement from the government. Tomorrow will be from prime minister Boris Johnson himself, where he’s expected to announce whether phase three of the government’s Plan To Rebuild – that is opening hospitality services on the 4th of July – will actually go ahead.

Of course, I’m excited at the idea of being able to go to the hairdressers again, to meet friends in a beer garden once more or enjoy a movie date on a weekend. But in my mind, those visions of returning to our ‘old normal’ are months away, when it doesn't feel like the virus could overwhelm the UK once more if we don’t listen to the science.

In a way, it doesn’t matter what you believe. Whether you’re excited by the easing measures, or sceptical about the timing of the next steps, this overwhelming monthly cycle makes announcement week feel like a seven-day stress dream. The government has always been in control of whether people live or die, whether our lives are better or worse, but right now, while their decisions could directly impact whether we – and our loved ones - survive this pandemic, that has never been more clear.
