Local leaders and policy makers will gather in Austin beginning today to continue their fight to reduce gun violence in the capital city. This will be the third
meeting for the annualThat’s when local leaders began planning the first Austin Gun Violence Prevention Summit , which ironically happened just weeks after theThe summit literally brought a lot of people to the table including city and county elected officials, law enforcement, religious groups, health care professionals, social workers and human rights advocates. All of them focused on curbing gun violence across the Austin area.
But the Austin Gun Violence Prevention Summit isn't just about data. Organizers say from the beginning, it's been about listening to the crime victims. Austin City Council District 10 Representative Alison Alter said at the first summit, “We have to hear from the victims and build this strategy with community to make it the most effective it can be. Part of violence prevention is targeting those efforts where violence is most likely to happen. And we need to hear from those communities on how we can be most effective to do that."
Austin Police and the Travis County District Attorney’s Office will be at this year's summit, but so will church leaders and community groups. This county-wide effort will be meeting Friday starting at 8:00 a.m. at Greater Mount Zion Church, and Saturday morning they will meet at Community First! Village.
