The Chief Secretary to the Treasury was unmoved by the superstars, and only went for his daughters
Conference ConfidentialIt was the biggest Labour conference for more than a decade, but one attendee said the worst in 20 yearsI’mand…oh, a new dawn has broken, has it not? I’m not talking about the election victory here – that’s old news – but something altogether more consequential.
Swifties took over Westminster years ago and their reign has, at times, felt suffocating. Somehow it felt like everyone was a Taylor fan, even though we knew – I knew! – that there were some people left who just didn’t like her music. Many in the lobby left with the Prime Minister in the evening and leftover journalists were so desperate for stories that one of them asked a wonk from the Institute of Government if they’d heard of any potential scoops. The IfG is a terrific think tank, but juicy headlines hardly is their specialty.
It also seems worth saying that, well, not a whole lot happened over the past three days. It isn’t exactly surprising, seeing as neither Keir Starmerare known for their sense of chaos and fun, but the lack of drama did dampen the overall mood a bit. There were no highs, there were no lows; conference simply ran its course, as it was always going to.
Still, he told me that this conference was the worst one he’d been to in twenty years, perhaps missing the irony of it all. There’s just no pleasing these people.
