The Park Royal Asda is being earmed for a huge new store, car park, and 1,500 homes. Local are divided over whether the influx of residents will be good or bad for the area
Some residents are concerned the development would be too big for the area. Others say the extra housing will benefit families and benefitResidents are divided over plans to turn a supermarket on a 10-acre plot of land into a new 'town', with 1,500 homes.
Plans for the development have not yet been submitted to the council, but Asda said they hope to provide 1,500 homes - though none of them will come with a parking space Caroline O'Malley, who works in the area, said: 'I'm unsure how I feel about it as there are already a lot of high-rises around here.
Bratik Patel, 42, who runs family-owned restaurant Spice Shack, said: 'I'd say having more people in the area will be good for business. Demetrios Demetriou, who has owned nearby Cafe Royal since 1990, also thought the proposals could help business - but said he thought most customers would come during the building process.
'The area makes sense too. It's been really industrial for a while, but they're slowly trying to make it more residential. The proposal is subject to planning approval, although bosses expect the proposal to land on council desks by the end of the year.Ian Lawrence, Head of Mixed-Use Developments at Asda, said: 'Asda's venture into mixed-use property redevelopment marks a significant milestone for the business.
It is the latest example of supermarkets selling their property to developers, and comes as Asda battles to cut costs while facing a £4.2billion debt pile. Last year retail giant John Lewis' plans for a 24-storey block of flats on top of a Waitrose store in Bromley, south London, prompted a series of objections from residents amid concerns about its size.
