The PM wants no surprises in stable relations with China. There should also be no surprises about what the Australian side stands for in this relationship.

As Anthony Albanese becomes the first Australian prime minister to visit China after seven years of diplomatic chill and a trade war, his Chinese hosts are set to highlight instead the breakthrough

But the prime minister should also remind his hosts firmly of the rules-based order upon which the prosperity of both sides stands. China disregarded the spirit of its 2015 free trade agreement with Australia when it launched a politicised trade war. Australia wants China to abandon claims on the South China Sea, and will again call out its attempts to gain de facto control of that global highway.

A rules-based order is not “containment” of China; it’s hard to see how a $US350 billion trade surplus with the US qualifies as containment. China prefers raw balance of power among big states to rules, based on supposedly abstract Western values, that all must follow. But will that help China stay prosperous? If the order needs adjustment, Beijing must make the reform case from the inside.
