The World Anti-Doping Agency has been heavily criticized this week for its secretive oversight of positive tests by 23 Chinese swimmers before the Tokyo Olympics. Now the agency has appointed a veteran Swiss prosecutor to review how it handled the case in 2021. Prosecutor Eric Cottier was attorney general for 17 years until December 2022 of Vaud.

An Australian newspaper said Saturday, April 20, 2024, 23 Chinese swimmers were cleared to compete at the Tokyo Olympics despite testing positive to doping because world governing bodies agreed with Chinese authorities and ruled that the tests had been contaminated.

Three of the 23 swimmers later won gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics where American and British swimmers took the silver medals. The Games were held in 2021. Chinese state authorities later explained to WADA it found evidence weeks after of contamination, including in spice containers, in the kitchen of a hotel where the swimmers stayed. It is still unclear how traces of the medication trimetazidine got into the kitchen.
