A family are being kept in isolation in Costa Rica after their unvaccinated son, 5, was diagnosed with measles while on holiday there.
According to the Costa Rica Star, the boy and his parents flew into the Central American country earlier this month and have stayed at hotels in San Jose and Santa Teresa during the holiday. The vast majority of children in developed nations are protected against the virus by the combined measles mumps and rubella vaccine .The WHO confirmed that the UK eliminated measles in 2016 thanks to the MMR jab.
Imported measles cases are found in the UK and anyone who hasn’t had two doses of the MMR vaccine can catch it.In 2016 there were more than 500 measles cases in England, many in teenagers and young people attending summer festivals who’d missed out on their MMR vaccine in childhood.
