Antiques Roadshow star Ronnie Archer-Morgan had a bleak childhood and describes going into care as the best thing that happened to him
Ronnie Archer-Morgan, star of the Antiques Roadshow, says going into care was the best thing that ever happened to him and says it saved his life When people ask Ronnie Archer-Morgan what the first antique he ever found was, he enthusiastically describes finding a clog buried under the sand on the beach at Southport when he was aged four or five.“I could just see this lump in the flat sand,” he recalls. “I dug it out of the sand and it was a single clog and was wet and soggy.
Ronnie first went into care from the maternity hospital, but whenever the authorities thought his mother was well enough, he would be sent back to live with her. The support, love and encouragement Ronnie received while in care shaped his life and he feels he has achieved success as a result. Even now, at the age of 73, he still sees families who used to foster him and asks himself whether Sister Ida, one of the women in the children’s home who made him feel loved and valued, would think of what he is now doing or approve of how he had managed a situation.
“They encouraged us to realise our creative abilities and we would have evenings where we would make things, draw, embroider, sew and knit. We’d have sports days and meals on the lawn in the summer. They took us to the theatre and pantomimes. He went on to art school then became a top DJ and then later became a hairdresser and worked as a celebrity hairdresser for Vidal Sassoon. Then a flair for spotting antiques led him to start his own Knightsbridge gallery and become one of the most respected figures in the industry. This led to his regular spot as an expert on the“I feel like everything I have done, I have reached a peak of success – and it all comes down to the way I was loved, encouraged and supported in care.
