Falls Park, which has seen a 29 percent increase in antisocial behaviour, will be the next park to be included in the pilot

A new system of 'static park wardens' involving Council staff dedicated to tackling antisocial behaviour in Belfast parks has been lauded after a pilot scheme reduced trouble in three selected parks by over 25 percent.

“They are deployed, as required, to provide a targeted response in parks with identified ASB issues during their working hours which reflect the standard ‘dawn to dusk’ opening hours of our parks. Since the start of the pilot there has been a 26 percent decrease in ASB incidents reported overall at the three park sites when compared to the same months the previous year. 61 ASB incidents were reported during the pilot period compared to the figure of 82 for the year before. This includes a slight increase in figures for ASB reports for the Woodvale Park site.

During the pilot period there was a significant increase in reported ASB in two other park/playground sites in the vicinity of the pilot sites. At Falls Park ASB reports were up from 51 to 66, a 29 percent increase, and at Ohio St playground ASB reports went up from 5 to 9, an 80 percent increase. “There is continuing investment there, with hundreds of kids part of the GAA fraternity, soccer clubs, the park run, and families there on a daily basis. But it is going through a rough period over the last period of months.
