Manchester United loanee Antony expressed his disappointment with the mentality of his Real Betis teammates following their 3-2 loss to Celta Vigo. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, Betis ultimately succumbed to a late winner, leaving Antony frustrated with their inability to maintain focus throughout the match.
Manchester United loanee Antony has criticized the mentality of his Real Betis teammates following a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Celta Vigo on Saturday. The 24-year-old joined the La Liga side on loan until the end of the season in the January transfer window. He impressed on his debut against Athletic Bilbao, grabbing an assist and being named man of the match, and followed that up with his first goal since September at the weekend.
Antony opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the match with a fine left-footed strike into the bottom corner. Diego Llorente doubled the lead in the first half but Betis were unable to hold onto the advantage and conceded a 3-2 defeat. Fran Beltran and Javi Rodriguez levelled the scores before Williot Swedberg netted the winner in the 87th minute. Antony, who was booked earlier in the game and substituted in the 72nd minute, was visibly frustrated by the loss. 'It's very difficult to understand that we lost this match,' he told DAZN. 'We started very well, we went 2-0 up but we have to change our mentality,' he added. 'We scored two goals, but we have to be focused throughout the match, the 90 minutes. We have to work better.' The Brazilian winger then urged his teammates to work on their mindset for the remainder of the season. 'We have to change our mentality,' he insisted. 'We have to start well and finish well. We have to work hard, look at what we are not doing well in order to get the three points in the next game.' Antony's impact since moving to Spain has been praised by Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini. Following the defeat to Vigo, the former Manchester City manager said: 'Well, I think it was a very positive debut. He's a quality player. 'I was talking to him just before the game. I think a good player doesn't have to be constantly showing off his skills with the ball. He has to play a good game, make few mistakes and do two or three important things: a goal, a good pass, a good cross.'
