Dog-like robot ANYmal's agility is boosted by a new framework, allowing it to tackle a basic parkour course at up to 6 feet per second.

Revamped learning method focuses on walking, crouching, climbing, and jumping, paving the way for ANYmal to navigate obstacles in future rescue missions., has been enhanced with a new framework, enabling it to complete a basic parkour course at up to 6 feet per second. Parkour, the urban sport of navigating obstacles with athleticism, is gaining widespread popularity.

Aiming to advance this, the team developed an improved neural network-based method with three modules for sensing, movement, and navigation. According to the team, the process entails teaching advanced locomotion abilities for various challenges, including walking, jumping, climbing, and crouching, and selecting and controlling those skills throughout the environment using a high-level policy. Because of its hierarchical design, the navigation policy may adjust its behavior based on the situation and is aware of each skill’s capabilities.

“By aiming to match the agility of free runners, we can better understand the limitations of each component in the pipeline from perception to actuation, circumvent those limits, and generally increase the capabilities of our robots, which in return paves the road for many new applications, such as search and rescue in collapsed buildings or complex natural terrains,” according to the team in a statement.
