A unanimous Eighth Ohio District Court of Appeals panel held Thursday that a visiting judge Euclid Municipal Court waited too long to hold a trial and violated Michael Amiott’s right to a speedy trial in the beating of Richard Hubbard III in 2017.

Appellate Judge Frank Celebrezze wrote the opinion, and he was joined by judges Lisa Forbes and Michael Ryan. “We raised this issue several times before the trial, during the trial and after the trial, and we knew this was the inevitable outcome,” she said. “It’s a shame so many taxpayer dollars were wasted along the road.”
A Euclid Municipal Court jury found Amiott guilty in July 2022 of misdemeanor charges of assault and interfering with the civil rights of Richard Hubbard III during an Aug. 12, 2017, traffic stop. A bystander recorded cellphone video of the attack that was posted online and viewed millions of times. The case was delayed several times, including by the COVID-19 pandemic that ground many court proceedings across the state to a halt.
