An 'en suite' toilet discovered in 2006 has led archaeologists to identify the site of King Harold's palace in Bosham, Sussex. The finding is significant because Bosham features prominently in the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting King Harold's final feast before sailing to Normandy.

Archaeologists have made a major historical breakthrough by identifying the site of King Harold's palace in Sussex. The discovery was made possible by the identification of an 'en suite' toilet found at the location in 2006. Experts now believe that the tragic king's estate was located on the grounds of a modern-day house in a coastal area of the village of Bosham , West Sussex.

This finding is significant because Bosham, where King Harold bid farewell before sailing to Normandy, holds a central role in the narrative of the Bayeux Tapestry. It is one of only three locations - along with Westminster and Hastings - depicted twice in this famous medieval artwork. The Bayeux Tapestry, stretching over 68.3 meters (approximately 224 feet), features the Bosham scene at its beginning, depicting King Harold enjoying a boisterous feast with revelers using giant drinking horns. The scene then transitions to the king descending a set of steps to the river, embarking on his ill-fated journey to Normandy. The discovery of the latrine, along with other artifacts such as Anglo-Norman pottery, a 11th-century silver brooch, and a copper alloy from a stirrup, provides further evidence supporting the presence of aristocrats with decorated horses at this location. The latrine, while not depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry, would have been situated just above the banqueting hall in a private chamber. Archaeologists believe that these wood-lined pits, often identifiable by their green hue and lingering unpleasant odor, are crucial clues to uncovering historical sites. The Bayeux Tapestry is renowned for its depiction of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, culminating in William, Duke of Normandy's victory at the Battle of Hastings, after which he seized King Harold's royal residence. This recent finding sheds light on the life and times of King Harold in the years leading up to his death at the Battle of Hastings in 1066
