TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Archaic ASIN Law a torment to salt farmers
THERE is a move in the Senate to amend Republic Act 8172, or 'An Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide .'The Senate Committee on Agriculture, led by Sen. Cynthia Villar, believes that the 28-year-old law has outlived its original objective and has contributed immensely to the drying up of the country's saltmaking industry.
Salt is a descaler agent for preventing mineral salt buildup in pipes and water tanks. It is a key component in making paper and tanning leather, and in the soap and detergent industry. The uses of salt are almost limitless, yet our salt industry is dying a slow death, all because of an outmoded law.Even before Senator Villar highlighted the plight of salt farmers, there have been calls to update RA 8172.
