Fascinating BBC Archive clip takes us back to Dumbarton Road in 1965, where Jimmy is one of a dwindling number of Glasgow blacksmiths who is finding it hard to attract new business.
The footage, which was shared online this week by BBC Archive, takes us back to Dumbarton Road in 1965, where an experienced blacksmith and farrier is lamenting the end of an era.
Horses were once essential to keep Glasgow on the move, but by the 1960s fewer and fewer of our equine friends could be heard clip-clopping along our streets. "One of the horses you've got in today is from Glasgow Corporation," notes the interviewer. "But at the same time, they've announced that they're going to take the last of the eight horses they've had working in the parks department off the road."
This is not too much of a concern for Jimmy, however, who says the heyday of attracting business via the corporation is long gone."Going back maybe 20 year ago, when you had a contract with a corporation horse you were quite happy."
