A recent study suggests that traditional baby names are on the rise, potentially overtaking unique and trendy choices. Names like Amelia and Oliver are predicted to be the most popular for girls and boys, respectively, in 2025.
Mothers and fathers-to-be have been increasingly choosing unique names for their babies in recent years. Inspiration often comes from exotic locations, precious gems, or even celebrities. Harper, the name of David and Victoria Beckham's daughter, was a popular choice in 2024, alongside names like Maverick and Nova.
However, recent data collected by Not On The High Street suggests that this trend toward unconventional names may be waning, with more traditional, 'old-fashioned' names gaining popularity. In response, the gifting marketplace created a list predicting the top 10 most popular baby names for 2025, based on data collected leading up to that year. The most popular baby girl name in 2025 is predicted to be Amelia, closely followed by Florence, confirming the rise of traditional names. For boys, Oliver is projected to be the top choice, with Charlie securing the second spot. Charlie has become a unisex name over the years and could be used for either a girl or a boy. Baby names are often inspired by celebrities and their children, and this influence is likely to continue in 2025. Celebrities like Amelia Dimoldenberg and Florence Pugh have seen a surge in popularity recently, with searches for Amelia Dimoldenberg increasing by 29 percent in the last quarter. Florence Pugh's numerous film releases in 2024, including Dune 2 and We Live in Time, could also have influenced the naming trends. More common names, such as George and Oliver, might be inspired by the birth of Justin and Hailey Bieber's son, Jack. Regal baby names continue to make the top 10 list. George, currently the third most popular boy's name, has seen a resurgence in popularity since the birth of Prince George, the future king, in 2013. Archie, ranking at number 9, also enjoys royal influence, gaining prominence after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle named their first child Archie in 2019. Other names inspired by royalty include Lilly, Sophia, and Henry. The late Queen Elizabeth was often affectionately called 'Lillibet' by her family, while Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, married to King Edward's brother, is a working royal. The name Henry has a long history among royals, most notably King Henry VIII, known for his six wives. So, will 2025 be the year of the traditional names making a comeback? 'If the data is anything to go by, yes,' a Not On The High Street spokesperson said. 'Traditional names have been gradually making their way into the top baby names list over the past couple of years, but 2025 more than ever appears to be a year they are going to dominate.
