Decked out in neon yellow safety vests during their two-hour daily search, the volunteer picker-uppers also make arrangements to dispose of bigger items like dumped couches and car tires. Volunteer Cleaning Communities holds cleanup events in the northeast Valley. Granada Hills CA, July 13, 2024 They work near the 118 Freeway and Balboa Ave., picking up trash. Every day she collected three bags of trash and soon realized that dumping garbage, mattresses, broken furniture and other trash on the streets and sidewalks was a serious issue in largely residential Chatsworth. So she began to invite others to join her.

When the volunteers come upon illegally dumped items that can’t fit into a bag — such as tires, furniture and mattresses — they use personal or rental U-Haul trucks and city-owned vehicles to deliver the bulky trash to local sanitation yards. Every situation is different.
